Clinical Safety Data and Standards of Practice for Injection Lipolysis

In a study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the object was to conduct a clinical safety data survey which was sent to physicians practicing injection lipolysis. Seventy-five physicians from 17 countries responded. Data from the treatment of 17,376 patients who underwent a total of 56,320 injection sessions were analyzed.

The safety data collected in this study indicate that, when practiced by licensed and certified physicians, the safety record for injection lipolysis is excellent. There were no deaths or hospitalizations resulting from treatment. There were also no bacterial or atypical mycobacterial infections, no reports of skin loss or ulceration, and no episodes of dermatitis or chronic skin irritation.

Effectiveness of primary compounds used in Mesotherapy

In a study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery the objective was to see if one of the main active compounds used in Mesotherapy, phosphatidylcholine was indeed effective at eliminating fat cells.

The study concluded that the compound phosphatidylcholine when properly used for fat dissolution works primarily as a detergent causing nonspecific lysis of cell membranes.

A non-surgical alternative to liposuction in body conturing

In a study by Dr. Karl G. Heinrich, the objective was to demonstrate the efficacy of injecting phosphatidylcholine in the reduction of localised fat deposits. 86 patients were included in the study. Patients received 1-3 treatments in localised fat deposits in various areas of the body using phosphatidylcholine. After treatment with phosphatidylcholine (250 mg / 5 ml), fat deposits show an average circumferential reduction per application of 2.70 cm.  No patient showed irregularities, dimples or any serious side effect after treatment. Results remained stable during the time of follow up. All patients showed remarkable reductions of the fat deposits treated with phosphatidylcholine. Using the correct technique, injecting phosphatidylcholine may be a safe and efficacious alternative to liposuction in patients objecting to surgery.

In the opinion of the author, the efficacy of phosphatidylcholine injections in the reduction of localised fat deposits is proven. To ensure a smooth and satisfying cosmetic result it is critical to use the correct injection technique.

Mesotherapy and Phosphatidylcholine Injections

In a study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery the objective was to distinguish mesotherapy from phosphatidylcholine injections by reviewing their history and the relevant experimental or clinical findings.

The conclusions of the authors were that Mesotherapy is distinct from a method of treating adipose tissue with subcutaneous injections of deoxycholate alone or in combination with phosphatidylcholine.  Additional clinical and experimental studies are necessary to more definitively establish the safety and efficacy of these treatments

Off label use of medications: The Botox Balance

The FDA first approved Botox under the name Oculinum in 1989 for treatment of two conditions, crossed eyes and eyelid tics. In almost no time, the drug was renamed Botox, and doctors from many branches of medicine-ophthalmology, neurology, rehabilitation, dermatology, plastic surgery, urology, and dentistryquickly saw its novel and unmet patient uses. Before long, practitioners began administering Botox for numerous conditions related to overactive muscle contraction: Wry neck, back pain, bladder spasms, migraine headaches, writer's cramp, and incontinence are just a few. This was made possible because FDAapproved drugs can be used by licensed doctors "off label" according to their best judgment. That includes indications other than the ones that led to FDA approval. (Approximately 20 percent of drug prescriptions are written off label, and in fields like cancer that percentage runs higher.) In one of its most stunning off-label successes, Botox has enabled children crippled by the spastic muscle contractions of cerebral palsy to get out of their wheelchairs and onto the soccer field.

The off label use of Botox is very similar to the off label use of the medications used in Mesotherapy.  However, just like a physician may use their discretion to use Botox to treat wrinkles so may a physician do the same with the compounds used in Mesotherapy.

Be sure to ask your mesotherapy physician any questions you may have concerning the safety of the ingredients they intend to use and any potential side effects.
